Cameron Albert (left) and Laura Heyd are the traditional country duo Hollow and Steel.

Those locals fortunate enough to have caught Hollow and Steel’s recent show at the Tioga County Fair might just have heard the next big thing in country music.

Laura Ashley Heyd and brother Cameron Albert are a classic country duo whose sound brings the spare, fiddle-tinged sound of the1950s and 60s to mind.

“We’re the entire band,” said Heyd. “We’re doing everything.

“It sets us apart. I write all the songs, and we record, produce, mix and master.”

Hollow and Steel released their first single, “Tennessee Moonshine”, last fall. Heyd sings lead vocals and Albert sings backup, with Heyd on guitar and Albert on keyboards and drum machine. They are currently working on a new album.

Heyd’s husband grew up on a farm in Navoo. The family connection brought Hollow and Steel to the Fair.

“We played West’s Restaurant in Mansfield last year,” Heyd said. “We just moved to Watertown, N.Y. a little more than a year ago, and we’ve been playing some shows here.”

Heyd said that she has been writing lyrics her whole life, “but it was more like poetry. I couldn’t bring myself to sing in front of people. I had to force myself.”

“My brother was actually more the musician, because I kind of hid my abilities until my early 20s,” she said. “He grew up playing keyboard, drums, pretty much everything.”

Heyd and her brother Albert have an unusually close sibling relationship. Albert shares the home where Heyd, her husband and their two small daughters live. They have a full studio in their home, which Heyd said is “a dream come true.”

“My husband and brother are both Navy vets, and I met my husband through him,” she said. “We ended up getting married and they were both hired for the exact same air traffic controller jobs in Watertown.”

Heyd and Albert have been collaborating for six years. They grew up in Nashville and were in the enviable position of attending the Grand Ole Opry “a couple of times a month” and mingling with country music royalty.

“My mom worked for a company that gave us passes, got us backstage,” said Heyd. “We met everyone — Charley Pride, the Dixie Chicks — we thought it was normal.

“Being from Nashville, we both really like country, the old stuff. We wanted to take our inspiration from that. We have such a wide expansive little bit of everything, I think our sound is a little different.”

Hollow and Steel took their name as a symbol of their relationship.

“My instrument, acoustic guitar, is hollow and pianos use steel wire,” said Heyd. “They’re opposites and that’s what we are. I’m everything he’s not, he’s everything I’m not. He’s my other half.”

Hollow and Steel’s music is available on all streaming and social media platforms including Apple Music, Spotify and Facebook.
