This application note discusses the use of COMPOSOLITE FRP covers from Strongwell as a replacement for aluminum and steel covers. The Mulberry wastewater treatment plant, situated in Fort Collins, Colorado, was in need of a removable cover measuring an 8-foot area without constructing an additional structure. The plant selected FRP covers as a solution.
Pipe Valve & Fitting, a distributor of Strongwell, provided COMPOSOLITE covers as a replacement for aluminum covers to Montgomery, Watson and Harza Engineering and its contractor, Hydro Construction.
The installation of the covers was done in an 8' x 40' section and numerous 8' x 8' sections. COMPOSOLITE’s higher strength-to-weight ratio was the key deciding factor in its selection over aluminum as it makes the product better for maintenance personnel access and foot traffic.
The COMPOSOLITE covers are hollow core construction, which enables them to easily accept a stainless steel recessed T-Bar handle for a surface free from interference. The installation of the covers was carried out in phases in 2010 and 2011
