The operator of the Nord Stream pipeline, an important conduit of natural gas from Russia to Germany, restarted early Thursday after more than a week of planned maintenance, relieving officials and executives who had worried Moscow would keep it shuttered.
Without Nord Stream, Europe would likely experience an acute gas shortage during the winter months when demand is at its peak. Some governments, including Germany, Europe’s largest economy, would need to resort to rationing of gas, hobbling industry and hurting already fragile economic growth. Russia closed the pipeline earlier this month to conduct regular maintenance, but European officials and executives had feared it might not reopen as planned.
